Sardinia pictures
This travel photo gallery shows pictures of the Italian island Sardinia in the mediterranean sea. Sardegna with its 23,821 km² is the second largest island in the mediterranean sea after Sicily. It is well known among travellers for its beautiful landscapes and beaches and its hospitable people. In former times called Ichnusa, Hyknusa and Sandalion Sardinia has lots of historical sites to offer as it is one of the oldest geological formations in Europe dating back to the PalaeozoicEra about 500 million years ago. People have permanently settled in Sardinia since about 6000 BC. The highest peak is Punta La Marmora with 1834 m above sea level and unlike Italy mainland Sardinia is not earthquake prone.
With about 1849 km of coastline and lots of prestine beaches Sardinia is a paradise for all watersport lovers.
The coastline is mostly high and rocky with long stretches of sand beaches inbetween.
The climate is quite mediterranean with about 300 days of sunshine in average and rainfall mainly in winter.
The average temperature is between 10 and 17° C.
Thanks to the always present Mistral wind coming from the North-West it never gets too hot and there always is a pleasant breeze around.
As the islands population only counts about 1.7 Million it is not exactly densely populated.
In the summer months tourists come from all over to enjoy the wonderful beaches and clean sea. Vegetation becomes a little less green than in spring or winter and housing may well be more expensive.
Nevertheless Sardinia stays a magnificent place to visit all year long. There is a strong vibe of high energy floating around one can immediately sense when exiting the plane. Territorial isolation paired with purest nature and clean sea make this island a special place.
